Overview
Fab Academy is a fast-prototyping programme directed by Neil Gershenfeld of MIT’s Center For Bits and Atoms and based on MIT’s rapid prototyping course: How to Make (Almost) Anything.
Fab Academy is an intensive five-month programme where students learn to envision, design, and prototype projects using digital fabrication tools. It is a multi-disciplinary and hands-on learning experience that encourages learning-by-doing, empowering participants to develop both creative and technical skills.
Throughout the programme, students will develop an analytical approach to their projects, gaining practical design experience and becoming familiar with industry standards and the latest innovation trends. They will also join a dynamic ecosystem of young scientists and entrepreneurs.
By the end of the course, students will have the essential knowledge to plan, develop, and prototype a final project. They will also understand how to plan a sustainable business and share cutting-edge designs within an open-source environment.
Programme structure
Fab Academy consists of online and offline classes, a method known as “distributed education”. Students work on two levels – global and local. The global level, referred to as the Global Campus, connects over 250 students enrolled in Fab Academy each year across more than 50 nodes worldwide. Students join weekly Global Lectures every Wednesday with Professor Neil Gershenfeld, who explains the content and sets the weekly assignment. Before each Global Lecture, a review session allows students to interact with the wider global community. Besides the Global Lectures and Recitations students have local classes and practices in our Fab lab.
