Overview
The Master in City & Technology (MaCT) redefines the future of the urban, through innovative, evidence based and experimental approaches to understand, design and materialise cities.
MaCT develops cutting-edge tools, designs and approaches to effectively operate in the context of planetary scale urbanisation, the climate change crisis and rapid technological development.
Taking place in Barcelona, the capital of urbanism, MaCT is a platform to shape multidisciplinary leaders empowered to pioneer the transition of the urban environment in the era of big data, towards resilient & circular cities, inclusive and just communities and adaptive and more than human urban environments.
Rooted in the agenda of MaCT is the ambition of reducing the distance between education, research and practice, the program is therefore conceived as a platform to apply innovative ideas to real-world problems.
Programme structure
The programme follows IAAC’s learn-by-doing methodology, where students develop interdisciplinary skills through hands-on experiences in design and research. Participants collaborate in a dynamic international group of faculty, researchers, and experts, fostering collective decision-making and materialising their project ideas.
MaCT + Thesis Project (Two-Year)
The first year of the MaCT + Thesis Project mirrors the structure of the MaCT programme, consisting of three terms, each three months long.
In the second year, students have the opportunity to work for an additional duration of 9 months on an Individual Thesis focused on the development of one research or pilot project. To bridge the gap between education, research, and practice, leaders from design, tech, networking, and the third sector collaborate with the MaCT team to present concrete challenges. This allows MaCT thesis students to propose research topics that ensure each thesis has a direct, meaningful impact on real-world scenarios.
In parallel to the development of the Thesis Cluster, the second year of MaCT offers a series of seminars enhancing the theoretical, practical, and computational skills of students divided along three terms.
